Overview

The Fire Systems Specialist (FSS.IIESMS) credential from the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Safety Management Systems (IIESMS) recognises seniority in the field of fire‑safety engineering and provides a gateway to more complex and rewarding projects. It is designed for professionals who design, install and interpret complex fire‑safety systems and who may not yet meet the requirements for the Certified Fire Engineer grade but still wish to be recognised within the engineering profession and benefit from professional development opportunities.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Fire Systems Specialist grade candidates must meet the following requirements:

* Educational qualification – A recognised engineering qualification, such as a National Certificate or Level 7 qualification on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications, or a primary degree in engineering accredited by IIESMS, or an equivalent qualification recognised by IIESMS.

* Professional experience – A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience after achieving the qualification. Experience should demonstrate the application of engineering knowledge and skills in a practical context and include hands‑on work designing, developing, installing, commissioning, operating or maintaining fire‑safety systems such as fire detection and alarm systems, sprinkler systems, smoke control systems and fire‑suppression systems.

Competence and commitment

Candidates must show:

  • A sound understanding of engineering principles and the ability to apply them effectively to solve fire‑safety problems.
  • Evidence of using both technical and practical skills to address engineering challenges related to fire‑safety systems.
  • The ability to communicate technical information effectively to colleagues, clients and stakeholders.

Professional conduct and CPD

Certified members are expected to adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards of IIESMS. This includes accountability for projects, upholding environmental engineering values and demonstrating a steadfast commitment to fire safety and occupational health and safety. Members must also commit to ongoing learning by actively participating in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities and maintaining an updated CPD record.

Application process, flexibility and professional review

The application requires submission of detailed documentation demonstrating qualifications, professional experience and competence. The IIESMS National Council may waive the formal degree requirement if an applicant has sufficient professional experience and meets the requirements of a competent person as defined by Irish legislation. The professional review involves assessment of the submitted documentation and, in some cases, an interview to evaluate the candidate’s competencies and commitment.
