Maintenance Engineering (MaintEng.IIESMS)
The Maintenance Engineer (MaintEng.IIESMS) credential from the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Safety Management Systems (IIESMS) is designed for recent graduates beginning their professional careers in maintenance engineering, particularly those assuming roles as facilities managers within small to medium organisations. This certification provides essential resources and support to help graduates transition from academic study to professional practice.

Maintenance Engineer (MaintEng.IIESMS)
The Maintenance Engineer grade is designed for professionals working in facilities management, building services maintenance, asset management, or related disciplines who hold a minimum NFQ Level 7 qualification. Members of this grade are entitled to use the post-nominal designation MaintEng.IIESMS.
This grade recognises competent practitioners who have gained at least 2 years of relevant professional experience in facilities management. It is suitable for facilities managers, building services engineers, maintenance managers, and those responsible for the upkeep, performance, and compliance of building systems and infrastructure in Ireland.
Maintenance Engineer members contribute to the Facilities Management Group within the Institute and benefit from access to technical resources, CPD events, and a professional network of facilities management professionals across Ireland.
Entry Requirements
What you need to apply for Maintenance Engineer membership
Qualification
A minimum NFQ Level 7 (ordinary degree) qualification in facilities management, building services engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline recognised by the Institute.
Experience
A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in facilities management, building maintenance, asset management, or a related field.
CPD
Maintenance Engineer members must complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing professional development per year. CPD records are subject to audit every 2 years.
Professional Review
Applications are subject to professional review including verification of qualifications, assessment of experience, and confirmation of competence in facilities management practice.
CPD Requirements
Maintenance Engineer members are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing professional development each year. CPD records are subject to audit by the Institute every 2 years. Acceptable activities include attendance at facilities management seminars and conferences, completion of relevant technical training, participation in professional committees, publication of research or case studies in building services, and mentoring of junior facilities management professionals.
Related Grades
Maintenance Engineer is the first of two discipline-specific facilities management grades within the IIESMS. Professionals who gain further qualifications (NFQ Level 8) and additional experience (4 years) may progress to Certified Maintenance Engineer (CMaintEng.IIESMS), which recognises a higher level of competence and professional standing in facilities management. Both grades sit within the Facilities Management Group of the Institute.
