Preparing for Your IIESMS Professional Interview

The professional interview is a key component of the application process for IIESMS certified grades and Fellowship. This guide provides practical advice on preparing for the interview so that you can approach it with confidence and present your professional competence effectively.

The IIESMS professional interview is not an academic examination. It is a structured professional discussion in which assessors explore your professional experience, specialist knowledge, and how you apply your competence in practice. The assessors - typically two to three experienced professionals from the Membership Committee - are looking for evidence of genuine professional competence and maturity, not memorised answers to standard questions.

Good preparation makes a material difference to the interview outcome. Candidates who have reflected on their professional experience, prepared specific examples, and thought about their professional development are better able to demonstrate the competence that the assessors are looking for.

What to Expect

The interview is conducted via video call and typically lasts 30-45 minutes. The format is conversational rather than adversarial. Assessors will ask open-ended questions about your professional career, your specialist practice, and how you approach professional challenges. There are no trick questions or gotcha moments - the purpose is to understand your professional competence through dialogue.

Typical Interview Structure

Opening (5 minutes): Brief introductions and overview of the interview process. The assessors will put you at ease and explain how the session will proceed.

Professional Background (10 minutes): Discussion of your career history, current role, and how you arrived at your specialist discipline. This sets the context for the more detailed discussion that follows.

Specialist Competence (15-20 minutes): The core of the interview. Assessors explore your specialist knowledge and practice through discussion of specific projects, challenges, and professional situations. They may ask how you approach common problems in your discipline, how you apply relevant standards and legislation, and what professional judgements you have made.

Professional Development (5-10 minutes): Discussion of your CPD activities, how you maintain your competence, and your professional development plans. Assessors are looking for evidence of reflective practice and commitment to ongoing learning.

Questions (5 minutes): Opportunity for you to ask questions about the Institute, your sector group, or any aspect of membership.

Preparation Guide

Review Your Professional Experience

Spend time before the interview reflecting on your professional career. Identify the key projects, challenges, and achievements that demonstrate your competence in your discipline. Think about what makes these examples significant - not just what you did, but why it mattered and what professional judgements you made.

Prepare Specific Examples

Generic claims of competence are less convincing than specific examples. If you are a fire safety professional, be ready to discuss a complex fire risk assessment you conducted, a fire safety management system you developed, or a challenging regulatory compliance situation you resolved. If you are an industrial engineer, discuss a process improvement project, a lean implementation, or a quality management challenge.

Know the Regulatory Framework

Assessors expect certified-grade candidates to demonstrate knowledge of the legislation and standards relevant to their discipline. Review the key references for your field - Fire Services Acts, IS 3218, PAS 79-1 for fire safety; the 2005 Act and General Application Regulations for safety and health; ISO 9001 for industrial engineering; and so on.

Reflect on Professional Development

Be prepared to discuss how you maintain your competence - the CPD activities you undertake, how you stay current with developments in your field, and how you apply new learning in practice. Assessors value evidence of genuine engagement with professional development, not merely logging hours.

Technical Setup

Ensure your video call setup works reliably. Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection before the interview. Choose a quiet, well-lit location where you will not be interrupted. Have a copy of your application and any supporting documents accessible in case you want to refer to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the IIESMS professional interview

The interview typically lasts 30-45 minutes. It is conducted via video call, so no travel is required.

Assessors are experienced professionals from the Membership Committee, typically two to three per interview, with expertise relevant to your discipline.

Nerves are natural. The assessors understand this and will work to put you at ease. Remember that the interview is a professional conversation, not an interrogation. Focus on discussing your professional experience honestly and specifically.

It is perfectly acceptable to say you are not sure about a specific point. Honest acknowledgement of limitations demonstrates professional self-awareness, which assessors value more than bluffing.

You can have notes available as a reference, but the interview should be a conversation, not a reading exercise. Key dates, project details, or standard references can be helpful to have at hand.

The Membership Committee typically reaches a decision within 4-6 weeks of the interview. You will be notified of the outcome by email.

The Committee provides constructive feedback on areas for further development. You can reapply once you have addressed the identified gaps. The grade review fee applies to each application.

Smart professional attire is appropriate. The interview is a professional meeting, so dress as you would for a client meeting or professional event.
