Regional Committees: Your Alternative Route Into the Institute

IIESMS is built around five specialist sector groups (Fire Safety, Safety and Health, Industrial Engineering, Facilities Management and Healthcare) and four geographic regional committees aligned with the provinces of Ireland. Every member finds a home in one or the other.

If your professional focus aligns clearly with one of the five disciplines, you will typically join the matching sector group as your primary community. If your work spans multiple disciplines, sits outside the five core sectors, or if you value networking with peers closer to home, a regional committee is the right fit. Regional committees bring members together geographically for CPD events, site visits, networking, local advocacy and peer support.

Members can also engage with both a sector group and a regional committee. Both structures feed into the National Council through liaison officers, so your voice is represented in national governance whichever route you choose.

Four Regions, Provincial Structure

The IIESMS Regional Committee structure is being formally constituted during 2026 under the new Articles of Association v1.3 and Byelaws v1.3. Ireland is organised into four regions aligned with the historic provinces: Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Each regional committee can have up to 16 voting members and operates with a quorum of three, meeting at least quarterly (virtual and hybrid meetings are permitted).

Each region is led by a Regional Lead who serves as the first point of contact for members in that area, coordinates local meetings and CPD activity, and channels regional feedback into the National Council. Regional leads serve an initial term of two years, renewable once at the discretion of the National Council.

We are seeking a Regional Lead for each of the four regions. Expressions of interest are welcome from Members (M.IIESMS), Fellows (F.IIESMS) and Certified grade holders who hold current IIESMS membership, have the time to commit to quarterly regional activity, and can demonstrate professional standing in their field. Write to [email protected] to register your interest.

Get Involved Locally

Members are encouraged to participate in regional activities, attend local events and consider volunteering as a regional representative or lead. Getting involved at regional level is a valuable way to grow your professional network, contribute to the Institute's mission and help shape the services IIESMS provides to members in your area. Regional activities typically include CPD seminars, site visits, legislation briefings, career events and informal networking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about IIESMS regional committees

Four: Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Each region corresponds to a historic province of Ireland. The Ulster region is all-island, covering the three Ulster counties in the Republic and the six counties in Northern Ireland.

Every IIESMS member must be aligned to either a sector group or a regional committee as their primary engagement route. Members whose work clearly aligns with one of the five disciplines usually choose the matching sector group. Members whose work sits outside those disciplines, or who want closer geographic engagement, choose a regional committee. Many members engage with both.

Regional committees organise CPD events, networking, site visits, legislation briefings and career events at a local level. They promote IIESMS activities, gather member feedback, and channel regional concerns into the National Council via a liaison officer.

Regional Leads are appointed from Members (M.IIESMS), Fellows (F.IIESMS) or Certified grade holders who are in good standing, can commit to quarterly activity, and demonstrate professional standing in their field. The initial term is two years, renewable once at Council discretion.

Up to 16 voting members per region, in line with the membership cap that also applies to the five sector groups. The quorum for a regional committee meeting is three.

Regional committees meet at least quarterly. Virtual and hybrid meetings are permitted, and additional meetings may be arranged around local events, site visits or specific projects.

Contact the Institute office at [email protected] or call +353 (0)51 311134. State your county and preferred engagement mode (sector group, regional committee, or both). We will connect you to the relevant Regional Lead or sector chair.

Yes. IIESMS operates on an all-island basis, and the Ulster region covers all nine counties of the province, recognising the cross-border working of many safety, engineering and facilities professionals.
