Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a cornerstone of professional membership with IIESMS. All members are expected to engage in ongoing learning and development throughout their careers, ensuring that their knowledge and skills remain current and that they continue to meet the standards expected of their membership grade.
The IIESMS CPD Framework
The Institute operates a structured CPD framework that sets out the minimum annual learning requirements for each membership grade. Depending on grade, members are expected to complete between 15 and 30 hours of CPD activity per year. Higher grades, such as Fellow (F.IIESMS) and Member (M.IIESMS), carry a greater CPD obligation, reflecting the advanced level of professional responsibility associated with those designations.
The framework is designed to be flexible, recognising that professionals develop their competence through a wide variety of activities. CPD is not limited to classroom-based training; the Institute values the full spectrum of learning that contributes to professional growth.
What Counts as CPD?
IIESMS recognises four broad categories of CPD activity. Formal training and education includes accredited courses, workshops, and academic study. Conferences, seminars, and webinars provide opportunities for members to stay informed about developments in their sector. Self-directed learning encompasses activities such as reading professional journals, conducting research, and engaging with technical publications. Finally, work-based learning covers mentoring, on-the-job training, and practical project work that extends a member's professional capabilities.
CPD Audits and Professional Credibility
Members should be aware that the Institute conducts periodic audits of CPD records. Selected members may be asked to provide evidence of their CPD activities, including certificates of attendance, reflective logs, and supporting documentation. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date CPD records is therefore essential.
Beyond compliance, CPD is fundamental to professional credibility. Employers, clients, and regulators increasingly expect professionals to demonstrate that they are actively maintaining and developing their competence. For IIESMS members, fulfilling CPD obligations is not merely an administrative requirement — it is a visible commitment to the highest standards of professional practice.
