NFQ and Professional Engineering Grades - How They Connect

Ireland's National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) provides a standardised way of understanding the level and value of qualifications. For engineering and safety professionals, understanding how professional designations map to the NFQ is essential - both for career planning and for demonstrating competence to employers and clients.
What is the NFQ?
The NFQ is a 10-level framework maintained by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). It covers all education and training awards in Ireland, from basic certificates (Level 1) through to doctoral degrees (Level 10). The framework allows learners, employers, and professional bodies to compare qualifications on a common scale.
For engineering and safety professionals, the most relevant levels are:
Level 6 - Advanced Certificate / Higher Certificate (e.g. two-year diploma programmes)
Level 7 - Ordinary Bachelor's Degree (e.g. three-year degree programmes)
Level 8 - Honours Bachelor's Degree (e.g. four-year degree programmes)
Level 9 - Master's Degree or Postgraduate Diploma
How IIESMS Grades Align to the NFQ
IIESMS has designed its 14 membership grades to correspond with NFQ levels, creating a transparent pathway from entry-level to senior professional status. This alignment means that each IIESMS grade reflects a combination of academic qualification, professional experience, and demonstrated competence appropriate to that level.
At the entry level, Student membership is open to those currently enrolled in a relevant programme. The Technician (T.IIESMS) grade corresponds to NFQ Level 6, recognising holders of advanced certificates or equivalent qualifications. Graduate Member (G.IIESMS) aligns with NFQ Level 7, while Associate Member (A.IIESMS) and Member (M.IIESMS) grades correspond to NFQ Levels 7-8 with increasing professional experience requirements.
The certified grades - such as Certified Fire Engineer (CFEng.IIESMS), Certified Industrial Engineer (CIndEng.IIESMS), and Certified Practitioner in Safety and Health (CPSH.IIESMS) - require both a Level 8 or Level 9 qualification and substantial professional experience, typically demonstrated through a professional review process.
Why NFQ Alignment Matters
NFQ alignment provides several practical benefits for professionals:
Employers and clients can immediately understand the level of qualification and competence a professional grade represents
International recognition is simplified, as the NFQ is referenced to the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), making Irish professional grades understandable across EU member states
Career progression becomes clearer, with defined pathways from one grade to the next based on both academic and experiential development
Procurement processes increasingly reference NFQ levels when specifying professional competence requirements for contracts
The Professional Review Process
For the higher certified grades, IIESMS requires candidates to complete a professional review. This process assesses not just qualifications but the depth and breadth of professional experience. Candidates submit an Initial Professional Development (IPD) report demonstrating their competence across the domains relevant to their discipline, followed by a professional interview with senior members of the relevant sector group.
This rigorous process ensures that IIESMS grades carry genuine professional weight. It is not simply a matter of paying a fee and receiving a post-nominal - it is a peer-assessed validation of professional competence.
