Professional Certification at IIESMS

Certified grades are discipline-specific. They require a relevant NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 qualification, sector experience (2 years for base certified, 4 years for senior certified), and a professional review including an interview. The designation tells clients and employers that your competence has been assessed by peers in your field.

Holding an IIESMS certified grade signals to employers, clients, regulators, and professional peers that you have met rigorous standards of education and competence specific to your discipline. The certified designation is earned through a formal professional review process that verifies your qualifications, experience, and professional standing against defined criteria.

IIESMS offers eight certified grades across four specialist disciplines: Industrial Engineering, Fire Safety, Facilities Management, and Safety and Health. Each discipline has two certified grades - a base-level Certified grade requiring NFQ Level 7 and two years of experience, and a senior Certified grade requiring NFQ Level 8 and four years of experience.

What certification means

An IIESMS certified grade confirms that your qualifications and experience have been assessed by peers in your discipline. It is not automatic. You apply, you demonstrate competence, and an independent review panel decides. The result is a professional designation that carries weight with employers, regulators, and clients across Ireland and Europe.

Certification Requirements

To apply for an IIESMS certified grade, candidates must meet three core requirements:

Qualification

A minimum NFQ Level 7 qualification (for base-level certified grades) or NFQ Level 8 qualification (for senior certified grades) in a discipline relevant to the chosen certified grade. International qualifications are accepted where they can be demonstrated as equivalent to the relevant NFQ level. The qualification must be in a field that is directly relevant to the discipline - for example, a fire safety or fire engineering qualification for Fire Engineer grades, or an engineering or manufacturing qualification for Industrial Engineer grades.

Experience

A minimum of 2 years (base-level) or 4 years (senior-level) of professional experience in the relevant discipline. Experience must be demonstrably in the specialist area, not merely general professional experience. For example, a Fire Engineer applicant must show experience in fire safety practice - fire risk assessment, fire safety management, fire engineering design, or related work - rather than general safety or engineering experience.

Professional Development

Certified grade holders are required to maintain 30 hours of CPD annually, with a 50/50 balance between formal and informal activities. CPD records are audited every 2 years. This ongoing requirement ensures that certified professionals maintain current competence in their discipline throughout their careers.

The Professional Review Process

Certification involves a formal professional review that goes beyond simple document checking. The review process is designed to verify that candidates have genuine professional competence in their discipline, not merely the minimum qualifications and experience on paper.

Document Assessment

The Membership Committee reviews your application, qualifications, CV, and supporting documentation against the criteria for your chosen grade. This initial assessment verifies that you meet the formal requirements for the grade.

Professional Interview

Candidates for certified grades are invited for a professional interview, typically conducted as a 30-45 minute video call with two to three assessors from the Membership Committee. The interview explores your professional experience in depth, examining how you have applied your knowledge in practice, the challenges you have addressed, and your contribution to your discipline. The interview is a professional discussion, not an academic examination - assessors are looking for evidence of practical competence and professional maturity.

Decision and Outcome

Following the professional review, the Membership Committee makes a decision within 4-6 weeks. Successful candidates receive their certified grade designation, membership certificate, and post-nominal letters. Where a candidate does not yet meet the requirements, the Committee provides feedback and guidance on what further development is needed.

Fees for Certification

Certified grade membership involves the following fees:

  • Annual subscription: EUR 295 (all certified grades)
  • Registration fee: EUR 15 (one-time, payable on first joining IIESMS)
  • Grade review fee: EUR 360 (one-time, payable when applying for the certified grade)

The grade review fee covers the cost of the professional review process, including the Membership Committee assessment and professional interview. This fee is payable once when you apply for the certified grade. If you subsequently upgrade from a base-level to a senior-level certified grade (e.g. from FEng.IIESMS to CFEng.IIESMS), a further grade review fee applies.
