The Professional Review Process

The professional review is how IIESMS verifies that candidates for certified grades have the qualifications, experience, and competence required. It includes a document review and, for certified grades, a 30 to 45 minute interview with assessors drawn from the relevant sector group.

The professional review applies to applications for certified grades (FEng.IIESMS, CFEng.IIESMS, IndEng.IIESMS, CIndEng.IIESMS, MaintEng.IIESMS, CMaintEng.IIESMS, PSH.IIESMS, CPSH.IIESMS) and for Fellowship (F.IIESMS). Applications for core grades from Student through Member are assessed through document review by the Membership Committee and do not normally require a professional interview, though the Committee may request one where additional information is needed.

The review process is designed to be rigorous but fair. Assessors are experienced professionals drawn from the Institute's membership and National Council, and they bring both technical expertise and an understanding of professional practice in the relevant discipline. The process is a professional discussion, not an academic examination - candidates should approach it as an opportunity to demonstrate their professional competence through conversation.

Stages of the Professional Review

Stage 1: Application Submission

The process begins with submitting your membership application through the online form. Include your personal details, qualification certificates, CV, professional references, and a summary of your relevant professional experience. For certified grades, provide specific evidence of your work in the relevant discipline - project descriptions, role summaries, and examples of professional challenges you have addressed.

Stage 2: Document Assessment

The Membership Committee reviews your application against the formal requirements for your chosen grade - NFQ level, years of experience, and discipline relevance. This initial assessment determines whether you meet the threshold requirements for the grade. If your documentation is incomplete or additional information is needed, the Committee will contact you.

Stage 3: Professional Interview

For certified grades and Fellowship, you will be invited to attend a professional interview. This is typically a 30-45 minute video call with two to three assessors from the Membership Committee. The interview is structured around your professional experience and competence, not as a theoretical examination.

Assessors will explore topics such as how you apply your specialist knowledge in practice, the types of projects or professional challenges you have addressed, how you maintain your professional competence, and how you handle ethical or professional dilemmas in your work. The interview is conversational in style - assessors are interested in understanding your professional practice and verifying that it aligns with the standards expected of your chosen grade.

Stage 4: Committee Decision

Following the interview, the Membership Committee deliberates and reaches a decision, typically within 4-6 weeks. The outcomes are: approval (you receive your grade designation), referral for further development (the Committee identifies specific areas where additional experience or qualification is needed), or deferral (you are invited to reapply after addressing identified gaps).

Stage 5: Onboarding

Successful candidates receive their membership certificate, post-nominal designation, and access to member resources. You are formally welcomed to your sector group community and begin recording CPD from the date of your admission.

Preparing for the Professional Interview

The professional interview is the most significant element of the review process for certified grades and Fellowship. Good preparation makes a material difference to the outcome. The following guidance will help you approach the interview with confidence:

Know Your Professional Story

Be prepared to describe your professional career in your discipline - the roles you have held, the types of work you have undertaken, and how your competence has developed over time. Assessors want to understand the breadth and depth of your experience, not just a chronological list of job titles.

Prepare Specific Examples

Think of specific projects, challenges, or professional situations that demonstrate your competence. For a fire safety professional, this might include a complex fire risk assessment, a building design review, or an emergency response plan for a healthcare facility. For an industrial engineer, it might include a process improvement project, a lean implementation, or a systems design challenge. Concrete examples are more convincing than abstract claims of competence.

Understand the Regulatory Context

Assessors expect certified-grade candidates to demonstrate knowledge of the regulatory framework relevant to their discipline. For fire safety, this means the Fire Services Acts, Building Control regulations, and relevant standards such as PAS 79-1 and IS 3218. For safety and health, this means the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations. Be prepared to discuss how you apply these requirements in your professional work.

Reflect on Professional Development

Be ready to discuss how you maintain and develop your professional competence - the CPD activities you undertake, how you stay current with regulatory and technical changes, and how you apply new learning in your practice. Assessors value evidence of reflective practice and genuine commitment to ongoing development.

Be Yourself

The interview is a professional conversation, not a performance. Assessors are looking for genuine competence and professional maturity, not rehearsed answers. If you are asked about an area where your experience is limited, acknowledge it honestly and explain how you would address the gap. This demonstrates professional self-awareness, which is itself a marker of competence.
