Student Member
The Student Member grade with the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Safety Management Systems (IIESMS) is tailored for individuals enrolled in an accredited programme. This membership offers early access to professional resources, networking opportunities, and career development support, bridging the gap between academic study and professional practice. IIESMS professionals work across all sectors of the economy, and Student Members can engage with any of the Institute's five specialist sector groups: Industrial Engineering, Fire Safety, Facilities Management, Safety and Health, and Healthcare.
Eligibility
- Enrolled full-time or part-time in an accredited programme relevant to industrial engineering, sustainable engineering, fire safety, facilities management, occupational health and safety, healthcare, or a related discipline, at NFQ Level 5 or above.
- Aligned with Lean Six Sigma White Belt level.
Application Evidence
- Proof of enrolment (student ID or institutional letter).
Rights and Benefits

CPD and Renewal
- Annual renewal with proof of continued enrolment.
- Student Members are encouraged to begin building a record of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity in preparation for progression to corporate membership grades, where annual CPD of 15 to 30 hours is required, depending on grade.
Pathway to Corporate Membership
Upon graduation, Student Members progress through the Institute's structured membership grades. The typical pathway is:
- Associate Member (A.IIESMS): The first corporate grade, open to graduates entering professional practice.
- Technician (T.IIESMS): Requires an NFQ Level 6 qualification, aligned with Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
- Graduate Member (G.IIESMS): Requires an NFQ Level 7 qualification with two years of professional experience, aligned with Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
Members may also pursue discipline-specific certified grades in Industrial Engineering, Fire Safety, Facilities Management, or Safety and Health as they gain further qualifications and experience.
