Prepare before applying

Use this page to understand what evidence is normally needed before applying: completed qualifications, relevant experience, CV, CPD records where applicable and the grade you can evidence.

The page should be read alongside the related membership, CPD, governance or sector pages where a decision or application depends on current evidence.

Choosing the Right Grade

IIESMS offers 14 grades across two categories:

Core Grades (All Disciplines)

Student (enrolled in NFQ 5+), Associate Member (open entry), Technician (NFQ Level 6), Graduate Member (NFQ Level 7 + 2 years), Member (NFQ Level 8 + 3 years), and Fellow (NFQ Level 9 or nomination). These grades are available to professionals in all five IIESMS disciplines.

Certified Grades (Discipline-Specific)

Eight specialist grades across Industrial Engineering, Fire Safety, Facilities Management, and Safety and Health. Base-level certified grades require NFQ Level 7 and 2 years of experience. Senior certified grades require NFQ Level 8 and 4 years. You can apply directly for a certified grade if you meet the requirements.

Not Sure Which Grade?

Consider your highest relevant qualification and your years of professional experience in your discipline. If your qualification is at NFQ Level 6, Technician may be appropriate. If at Level 7 with 2+ years, consider Graduate Member or a base-level certified grade. If at Level 8 with 3+ years, consider Member or a senior certified grade. Contact [email protected] for personalised guidance.

What You Will Need

To apply for IIESMS membership, prepare the following:

  • Qualification certificates showing your highest relevant academic qualification and NFQ level (or international equivalent)
  • Curriculum vitae detailing your professional experience, roles, and responsibilities
  • Professional references from colleagues who can verify your professional competence and experience
  • Sector experience evidence (for certified grades) demonstrating your work in the relevant discipline
  • Registration fee of EUR 15 (one-time) and first year's annual subscription

For certified grades, you will also need to pay the EUR 360 grade review fee and be prepared for a professional interview (30-45 minutes via video call).

After You Join

Once your application is approved, you will receive your membership certificate and post-nominal designation. You will be enrolled in your chosen sector group and gain access to:

  • Sector group CPD events, webinars, and networking opportunities
  • The IIESMS CPD framework for recording and developing your professional competence
  • Committee participation opportunities within your sector group
  • Access to the Institute's policy and advocacy activities
  • Optional IISE (USA) affiliation at EUR 80 per year
  • Grade progression pathway towards higher membership grades

Your first priority should be to engage with your sector group community, begin recording your CPD activities, and familiarise yourself with the Institute's events programme. Active membership delivers the greatest value when you participate beyond simply holding a grade.

Not sure a sector group fits? Try a Regional Committee

If your professional focus does not align cleanly with one of the five sector groups, or if you would rather engage with the Institute closer to home, IIESMS operates four regional committees aligned with the historic provinces of Ireland: Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Regional committees bring members together for CPD events, site visits, networking and local advocacy, and feed directly into the National Council through a liaison officer. Each regional committee can have up to 16 members.

Members can engage through a sector group, a regional committee, or both. Visit the Regional Committee page to see the counties covered by each region and to express interest in joining or leading a regional committee.
