Prospective Members
Everything you need to know before applying for IIESMS membership.

Information for Prospective Members
If you are considering joining the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Safety Management Systems, this page provides a comprehensive overview of what IIESMS offers, how membership works, and what you need to apply. IIESMS is Ireland's multi-discipline professional body for professionals working in industrial engineering, fire safety, facilities management, safety and health, and healthcare.
IIESMS membership provides professional recognition through post-nominal designations, a structured career development framework aligned to the National Framework of Qualifications, access to sector-specific CPD events and networking, and representation at the highest levels of Irish governance through the Senate nomination privilege.
Whether you are a student, an early-career professional, or an experienced practitioner, IIESMS has a membership grade designed for your career stage and professional aspirations.
Choosing the Right Grade
IIESMS offers 14 grades across two categories:
Core Grades (All Disciplines)
Student (enrolled in NFQ 5+), Associate Member (open entry), Technician (NFQ Level 6), Graduate Member (NFQ Level 7 + 2 years), Member (NFQ Level 8 + 3 years), and Fellow (NFQ Level 9 or nomination). These grades are available to professionals in all five IIESMS disciplines.
Certified Grades (Discipline-Specific)
Eight specialist grades across Industrial Engineering, Fire Safety, Facilities Management, and Safety and Health. Base-level certified grades require NFQ Level 7 and 2 years of experience. Senior certified grades require NFQ Level 8 and 4 years. You can apply directly for a certified grade if you meet the requirements.
Not Sure Which Grade?
Consider your highest relevant qualification and your years of professional experience in your discipline. If your qualification is at NFQ Level 6, Technician may be appropriate. If at Level 7 with 2+ years, consider Graduate Member or a base-level certified grade. If at Level 8 with 3+ years, consider Member or a senior certified grade.
