How Members Can Get Involved in IIESMS Committees
Date Published

IIESMS members can strengthen the Institute by contributing to sector groups, regional activity, committees and professional discussions. Committee involvement should be practical, evidence-based and connected to the member's experience, availability and professional interests.
The main Sector Groups page explains the sector structure. Sector groups operate in an advisory and engagement capacity, supporting CPD topics, member participation and professional discussion within their discipline.
Ways members can get involved
- Select the sector group or regional committee most relevant to your professional work.
- Attend events, webinars, meetings or CPD activities where available.
- Offer suggestions for CPD topics, speakers, standards updates or practical guidance.
- Volunteer for committee work where a suitable role is available.
- Contribute sector knowledge, professional experience or review support where appropriate.
- Share confirmed professional news or useful updates through the appropriate Institute route.
What committees can contribute
Committees help the Institute stay connected to practice. They can identify topics that members need, suggest CPD activity, discuss sector issues, support professional engagement and raise matters for National Council consideration where appropriate.
Committee work should be practical and proportionate. It should not create the impression that a committee has decision-making authority unless that authority has been formally delegated by the National Council.
CPD and professional contribution
Committee participation may support CPD where it involves relevant professional learning, preparation, discussion, research, presentation or contribution to sector knowledge. Members should record the activity and learning outcome in the same way as other CPD.
The IIESMS Continuing Professional Development page explains CPD evidence. Members can use the guide on what to include in an IIESMS CPD record to record committee-related learning.
Choosing where to contribute
- Industrial Engineering Group - systems improvement, productivity, quality, lean and operations.
- Fire Safety Group - fire risk assessment, fire safety management, emergency planning and fire safety systems.
- Facilities Management Group - estates, buildings, maintenance, compliance and workplace systems.
- Safety and Health Group - occupational safety, risk management and workplace health and safety.
- Healthcare Systems Group - non-clinical healthcare safety, estates, facilities, emergency planning and systems improvement.
A practical next step
Members interested in contributing should start by reviewing the relevant sector group page and contacting the Institute with a short note on their experience, sector interest and availability. Committee involvement should be matched to a useful role and the needs of the Institute at the time.
